Putham Pudhu Kaalai is a feel-good film capturing stories of new beginnings

Regional cinema, especially from the South, has been gaining a lot of love from film lovers everywhere, and it’s for a reason! One of my friends recently made me watch “Putham Pudhu Kaalai” (New Beginnings) now streaming on Amazon Prime and it reminded me why we should “overcome the one-inch barrier of subtitles.” 🙂

This movie is basically an anthology of 5 shorts by some of the leading directors of the Tamil movie industry. 5 different stories, from 5 different walks of life, give us a peek at life and relationships during the recent lockdown!

Five beautiful stories crisply compiled in this special, very hollywood-ish vibes yet hits close to home with the kind of desi stories in it. Famous actors like Jayaram, Shruti Hassan, Kalidas, Kalyani Priyadarshani etc. are in titular roles.

Set in a pandemic, all shorts have a different narrative, but a common theme of “New Beginnings” – one is about a middle-aged man & woman trying to understand the chemistry between them and giving love a second chance but shut in a house together because of lockdown. The second one is about a grandfather & granddaughter relationship which is all about them mending the generation gap.

The third one is about a family that reunites amidst their raging conflicts and understands each other’s emotions better, The fourth one is about how old friends meet during the pandemic and yet prove to be helpful despite all that’s been gone. And last but not the least is the one about two petty thieves who have had a hard time running their livelihoods amidst the pandemic & how they hope it gets better with time. It’s probably the best out of all.

Each story is beautifully done. The emotions, the dialogues, and the acting make you cry, laugh, and smile as wide as you can. It’s all about taking a step with change and making a change in yourself too for a better tomorrow w your loved ones. Not every short hit the bull’s eye cuz with the runtime the mellow drama makes it a bit slow, but then as a whole, it comes together nicely!

Highly impressive acting performances make the anthology amaze despite some of the narrative lags. Shruti Hassan is a delight in the story she is a part of and it’s so cool to see her pulling off such a role after long. Kalidas & Jayaram win you over too! And the small songs & bg music is soothing to the ears- wish there were more of them :’)

The different stories show how it’s okay to give love a second chance no matter what your age. They show how you can amend relationships even after time has bygone. They show how even when the world shuts down, and everything is at standstill- you always have family to rely on. They show that hope is there, cuz there is always light at the end of the tunnel. And yes, they tell us to be positive throughout it all- good or bad :”)

The film will fill you with uwu, make you understand the unspoken miscommunications the pandemic gave us and make you feel like hugging your loved ones- and despite all its small flaws stay with you like the lessons life taught us through the past 8 months.

A nice Sunday watch 🙂
